There is something about the mere existence of wild animals that captivates me. I’m endlessly curious about what it is like to experience the world as they do—to move through life without the same thoughts, worries, and questions that occupy our minds. Their experience of the world is so different from ours, and I find that difference endlessly fascinating. I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand what it means to experience the world as another animal, but that mystery is part of what draws me to them.
When I paint wildlife, I’m trying to capture some of that. I don’t usually want the painting to feel like a study of an animal or a perfectly rendered photograph. I want there to be a sense that the animal is actually there—that you can look at it and imagine what it might do next.
